September 11th, 2009: A Day of Remembrance and Service

KYW Newsradio Team Coverage

Friday marks the eighth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center that killed thousands and changed the lives of just about everyone in the country.

KYW's Mike DeNardo reports that for the first time since September 11, 2001, this day is being observed as a national day of service.

Back in April, President Obama signed a law declaring September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance.

Volunteers in Philadelphia can choose among 87 organizations taking part in a volunteer fair Friday at city hall. We're talking about the Red Cross, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Americorps programs.

Organizer Todd Bernstein of Global Citizen says it's a way for people to contribute on September 11th and every day:

"It's really a great opportunity but also to step up as active citizens and give something back to the community."

The organizations will set up tables in the city hall courtyard. With AccuWeather calling for rain, they'll move those tables under the portals.
