Philly Serves Volunteer Fair - September 11, 2009
Friday, September 11
9:00 am to 2:00 pm
City Hall Courtyard
Do you have an interest in giving back to your community? Would you like to learn more about volunteer opportunities in the Philadelphia area? Join Mayor Michael Nutter and over 80 organizations on September 11 for the PhillyServes Day Volunteer Fair. This event is part of a National Day of Remembrance and Service and will highlight our city’s commitment to volunteering and civic engagement. The Volunteer Fair will offer the opportunity for every Philadelphian to learn how these organizations are making a difference, how you can sign up to volunteer your time and talents, and help make a lasting impact on the lives of other Philadelphians. The event will include a noon public ceremony featuring Mayor Nutter. The mayor, along with Global Citizen and MLK365, will host the Volunteer Fair in City Hall Courtyard from 9am-2pm.
From 4-6pm, the mayor, in partnership with Greater Philadelphia Cares, City Year, AARP and SEPTA, are organizing volunteers to give away thousands of free children’s books to parents of young children. Volunteers will help promote reading and boost child literacy across the city by giving parents more books at home to read to their kids.
The City of Philadelphia is committed to building upon President Barack Obama's call for Americans to give whatever time they can to volunteer and help their fellow citizens. Despite these difficult economic times, Philadelphians have continued to step up by lending their time, talent, and energy to serve their communities. It’s with that spirit of volunteering that Philadelphia's day of service, PhillyServes Day, will continue to make Philadelphia a leader in promoting and creating opportunities for people to get involved and to help their fellow citizens
As citizens across the country remember the tragic events of September 11, 2001, Mayor Nutter asks Philadelphians to honor the sacrifice made on that day by volunteering their time and helping make Philadelphia a city of service.
We hope you can join us and also share the information with family, friends, and colleagues.
